Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing secret information in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
