World Health Organization Sounds Alert Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs

Less than one in 10 people who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy have access to them, warns the global health agency as it issues its inaugural advice on the drugs.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide now classified as obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

Based on projections, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be managed with thorough and ongoing support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to broad access to the treatments that can help people shift substantial body mass, says the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even under the present most optimistic scenario, the manufacturing of such drugs might only reach approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The advice encourages nations and manufacturers to expand availability, by strategies such as patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core component of a leading brand – is set to lapse in several countries in 2026.

These medications replicate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase satiety so users reduce food intake.

Patients commonly start to lose weight after several weeks of beginning the weekly injections.
